Help You Help Yourself

When was the last time you went to see a therapist or a counsellor, a psychologist or a psychiatrist or a life coach or a personal trainer etc? Did you come right out of it feeling pumped, refreshed, energized with a good sense of direction? How often did you go back to revisit? How were you coping at regular intervals? Well, these are just some questions to set the tone for this post and hopefully get you in thinking mode.

What would you do if you find yourself off track and the next appointment is still 1 or 2 months away? What would be your fall-back plan in this instance? Would you call your friends or family for their emotional support? What if they aren’t readily available for whatever reason? Would you take it in your stride?

A testimony to self-reliance! There’s homework we can do between each session to keep ourselves on the right track and avoid relapsing into the same old vicious circle. In my own experience, I adopted one specific technique like this: Review and see how far you’ve become. Ask yourself, do you honestly want to go back to square one and start all over again? When the answer was a firm No and I didn’t feel the need to go over the same issue, I knew I’d made a progress. Then it came the day that I called to cancel my next appointment…
