Be Comfortable In Your Own Skin

Just be yourself! How many times have you heard of an advice like this? Apparently, it’s one of the key elements of what makes successful people successful. But what does Be Yourself really entail? Have you ever taken a moment to re-think about these two short words and what they imply from a personal development’s perspective? Perhaps it’s time to dig into it…

Funnily enough, as soon as I decided to write a post about this topic, many opportunities started to present themselves and work their magic to bring the idea to the forefront. In the process, I came to realize the closest thing to Be Yourself is: Be Comfortable In Your Own Skin. As a starting point, I began to break it down word by word, piece by piece and look at the meaning in a literal sense, Astonishingly, it soon became quite clear to me why this phrase makes perfect sense. All I can say is whoever invented this idiom was either a pure genius or an individual with great wisdom and wit. Here’s why…

Unarguably, the skin is the largest organ of the body. So, in such context it makes even more sense to say that be comfortable in your own skin implies a full-scale self-acceptance. For me, it applies to all aspects of physical and emotional beings in all stages of life. Of course, the be-all and end-all of this notion is that none of us remains in a permanent state of situation forever as things do evolve and change over time. Therefore, how to stay the course and be authentic all the way at any given time becomes quite a challenge.

If you’ve ever wondered where to start to be yourself, look no further than the depth of your skin! Try this at home, in your office, anywhere: Love your skin – love your true colours, whether you have a dark or light complexion or anything in between, whether you have a thick skin or thin skin or combination skin, embrace it wholeheartedly and unapologetically.

On a lighter note before I close this post, here’s a recent photo of my dog taken right after he got his hair trimmed. I don’t know if it’s his new hairdo or something else, the fact that it reveals more of skin seems to make him very “excited” every time!
